Tooling Design Trial

Same as previous years, students who are taking EPD342 Design for Manufacture and Tooling need to test trial designed tool. This time, they need to produce pipe notching tool. To reduce time and material, they decided to share a few of the parts (Figure 1). At the same time, they also tested their mini project, smart tooling system. As usual, there are success stories and there are also reworked cases, but none consider failed. In the future, several aspects need to be taken into account including, deviation of the dimension due to heat treatment, wrong selection of die clearance value and also unexpected things happened like overcompressed on the spring and misallignment. Two major defect detected are high burr and incomplete cut, which both are caused by wrong calculation of the die clearance (Figure 2).

This project is a teamwork effort and progressive, Every team member need to participate and contribute. No such terms so called passenger. However, it is still happened and the role of the group member to handle it and avoid it from damaging the group.

I have shared the story about the tooling design project for 2024-2025 in the linkedin Part 1 to 8. Example links are as below.

Welcome Dr Hasnulhadi to MFRL

Yesterday, 1st of July 2025, MFRL has received visitors from Unimap, lead by Dr Hasnulhadi. The event begins with sharing session about the MFRL by the Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Baharuddin bin Abdullah. The purpose of this visit is to discuss possibilities of collaboration in research and sharing of facilities. Two major area agreed to be further explored are on cold forging and metal additive manufacturing. The event ends with lab visit. We are hoping for an active and productive collabiration after this. Thank you Dr Hasnulhadi and team for the visit.

Congrats Amer

Today is a day that cannot be forgotten by Amer. History was made as he passed his viva voce with minor corrections. Amer came to USM with a lack of knowledge and experience in research. Alhamdulillah, at last he managed to complete his journey as a PhD student and successfully published 3 papers along the way. Hopefully he can use the lesson with his student at JMTI, Bukit Minyak, Penang.

His study is focus on a study on new joint configuration for AA6061-T6 blank with different thickness. Comparison was made among the typical joint i.e. butt, with two other joints, scarf and double butt lap joints in terms of springback behaviour and mechanical characteristics including tensile and hardness properties.

First Postdoc at Metal Forming Lab

SDG 9

We are delighted to announce the joining of Dr. Aslam as the first postdoc at the Metal Forming Research Lab. His project is on the real-time data monitoring of MMCs-AISI304 stainless steel melt pool sledding on low-carbon steel using wire arc additive manufacturing. His PhD is from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, Assam, India. Welcome, Dr. Aslam.

Sharing Session at ETW2025

SDG 9 SDG 4

Engineering and Technology Week (ETW2025) was organized by Malaysian Society of Engineering and Technology (MySET) from 17th to 23rd of May 2025. The theme of ETW2025 is “Digital Revolution in Engineering and Technology: Redefining Efficiency, Safety and Sustainability”. The lab has given a slot to expose ourselves to the public thru sharing session by our Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Baharuddin Abdullah. His talk is on Metal Additive Manufacturing: Issues and Challenges. He has take this opportunity to share an update about the research run at the lab.
